Fairfield County Ice Cream Shop Owner Scoops Up Kindness With Al's Angels

WESTPORT, Conn. -- For Al DiGuido, the owner of Saugatuck Sweets in Westport and Fairfield, giving is a year-round endeavor.

Tis' the season of giving, but for Al DiGuido, of Saugatuck Sweets in Westport and Fairfield, every day is meant for thinking of others.

That's because the Westport resident is the charitable force behind Al's Angels, which he formed in 2004 with "the mission of providing moments of joy and comfort to families that are challenged by childhood cancer, rare blood diseases, AIDS, domestic violence, and financial hardship."

"Through hard work, an amazing group of volunteers, and tremendous generosity, Al's Angels is able to help thousands of children in the tristate area," he told Daily Voice.

He said the organization is important to him because he's always felt the responsibility to help those in need. "Many ask if I had a child impacted by cancer, rare blood disease and/or severe financial hardship," he said. "I quickly say...no but I never felt that just because I wasn't impacted directly it wasn't my mission to help members of the human family that were impacted.

"In this way...What if it WERE me? What if it were MY child? These thoughts continue to haunt and inspire me at the same time."

And though he gets most of their toy donations around this time of year, the work of the Angels is done throughout the year and through the numerous fundraisers he does throughout the year.

DiGuido was recently part of a video segment put out by Norwalk-based Hoopla-Ha Only Good News. Click HERE to see this "sweet" man talk about his passion for community and the importance of small towns.
