The summit is part of a long-term goal of drafting a model global curriculum. Kuwana said she long believed something was missing in the typical approach to global education. Growing up in both Japan and the United States, she was keenly aware of the importance of acculturation — of picking the best of multiple cultures and adapting.  Kuwana discusses her upbringing in Japan and the U.S. in an online video.

Despite the promise of technology to connect, she said that online learning often cuts out the central part of the equation — the human element. After teaming with friends at the Harvard School of Education, Harvard Business School and Phillips Exeter Academy, she created the blueprint for a summit on the meaning of global citizenship today focused on multiculturalism, multilingualism, and solid character.

Kuwana is also the founding principal of Cook Pine Capital and is a member of the board of the leadership circle of the YWCA of Greenwich. She has spent more than two decades working on Wall Street and founded Global Citizens Initiative in 2011.

Students will discuss as equals the question of what global citizenship means in the world. The program, which will run from Aug. 2 to 9,  is seeking applicants ages 16 to 18 from students around the world.

The application period will run through March 10  and they are also looking for student nominations. Information about nominations can be found online
