DARIEN, Conn. Joyce Canto Hill, a lifelong Darien resident, died April 19 at Meadow Ridge Health Center in Redding after a long illness. He was 84.
Hill was born June 25, 1927 in Darien and grew up with a large, close-knit family in Noroton Heights. She graduated from Middlesex Hospital School of Nursing in Middletown, Conn. in 1949.
Hill worked for many years as a registered nurse for Stamford Hospital, St. Joseph's Hospital, the Visiting Nurse Association and later in private care nursing. As proud as she was of being a registered nurse, she was most devoted to her family. She is remembered by family for her compassion.
Hill was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, George; her parents, Louis Canto and Mary Bruno Canto and a brother, Louis Canto Jr. She is survived by two sisters, Marjorie Canto of Darien, and Civita Canto Wilcox, of Monroe; two sons, Stephen T. (Michelle) Hill of Milford and George W. (Deborah) Hill Jr., of Waco, Texas and four grandchildren.
Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at Edward Lawrence Funeral Home in Darien. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday at St. John's Roman Catholic Church in Darien. Burial will immediately follow at Spring Grove Cemetery in Darien.
