To the Editor:
Once again, our tireless state Rep. Terrie Wood is working for us! She took a course on Mental Health First Aid (MHFA,) recommended by the Mental Health Working Group. This training is an internationally recognized 12-hour certification course to help individuals and communities better understand mental health issues and the appropriate response to others who may be experiencing distress.
With the prevalence of violence in Connecticut recently, and the gun control vs. mental health battles waging, this is an important first step in the prevention of future tragedy. Terrie learned the necessary skills to help someone developing a mental health problem or already experiencing a mental health crisis. Like CPR training helps an individual following a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid helps an individual – without clinical training – assist someone experiencing a mental health crisis.
We can also take this course and learn:
- the prevalence of mental illnesses in the U.S.;
- the potential warning signs of the most common mental health disorders;
- a five-step action plan to assist an individual in crisis; and
- resources available to help someone with a mental health program.
You can attend this two-part session at the Darien EMS Post 53 headquarters on Ledge Road in Darien on Friday April 26, and Friday, May 3, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Contact Dawn Roy at 203-331-7458 or email@example.com for more information.
Thank you Terrie for proving once more that you are there for us, providing us insight into the programs that are available that we can participate in and hopefully use to make a change! You are clearly the best person to represent us!
