DARIEN, Conn. The following letter on the third debate between Darien's first selectman candidates was written by Darien resident Debbie Ice.
So, it's a democracy. We graciously accommodate challengers in a democracy because we don't want our government to forget who they are elected officials who work for the town.
It's election time and the challengers to the status quo ask for a third debate, wanting as much exposure as possible.
The present government official says, OK but only at 1 p.m., on Nov. 3 (past media deadlines so nothing would be in the paper) and ONLY at the Senior Center.
The challengers and media suggest that the date would have to meet media deadlines. The challengers are confused as to the insistence of the town's Senior Center as a location for the event. They find five other venues, offer several dates and point out the problem with daytime debates, the primary problem being inconvenience for the entire town, most of whom work or have children and volunteer.
The present government official whips out a press release confirming she has unilaterally booked the debate at the Senior Center on a particular day at 1 p.m.
Let me start over. So, it's a democracy. We graciously accommodate challengers in a democracy because, well, we don't want our government to forget who they are ELECTED officials who work FOR the town.
