DARIEN, Conn. My name is Monica Frate. I have a small business here and I have grown up in Darien. My family has also been here for several generations. We are all small business owners. I am writing in regards to the potential plastic bag ban in town. I hope that Darien decides to lead the way to a brave new modern future with no more wasteful, polluting plastic bags.
We live on a beautiful planet and will be leaving it to our grandkids. It is our duty to take care of it for them. Producing plastic bags wastes oil, creates and releases noxious fumes into the air and releases cancer-causing waste into the water. Plastic bags also create trash. They do not go anywhere. They outlive us.
I have absolutely no issue carrying things to my car in my own two bare hands and I also use re-usable bags. Big box stores like Costco have already banned plastic bags, in fact years ago. For years now, they have instead been re-using their cardboard shipment boxes. What a great idea. If a big box store can easily function and thrive without wasting any plastic bags at all, who can honestly say that the smaller box stores in town cannot?
Let's ban the bag. It's past due time.
