Jodi Manjuck at Flowers & Flowers says red roses tend to be the most popular floral gift men give women for Valentine's Day. She adds that this is ironic since women don't really like receiving red roses.
"A lot of them like different seasonal arrangements, or different color roses, but not so much the red roses," says Manjuck, whose brother Adam owns the Darien shop and designs the floral arrangements. Adam has been in business since 1997, and opened the storefront last Thanksgiving.
Manjuck says they did pretty well last Valentine's Day, and are getting ready for this year. "It's still early, but we've had orders coming in."
Over at Nielsen's , they've been very busy putting together bouquets and arrangements. "It's been a busy weekend," said Elise Blount, the wedding and events coordinator. They've already had a lot of orders, and are expecting to be even busier on Monday. "We have to be prepared, she says. A lot of men wait until the last minute."
Blount said that they are busier this year because Valentine's Day did not fall during the February school vacation as it has in the past. "It's increased the number of calls we've had. Normally people would be away on trips."
The back storerooms are filled with the arrangements that they have already put together. "People are being very romantic this year. A lot of people, if the wife is working, want it delivered to where they work and make a big show in front of everybody," Blount said.
She said that a lot of the orders have been for red roses, but agreed that women don't really like red roses. "We've also had a lot of orders for different colored roses, or mixed flower bouquets. We try to make something special for everyone."
