DARIEN, Conn. Walking into Darien's newest fitness center feels more like going into an Apple Store than entering a traditional gym. Koko Fit Club features computerized workout machines that tailor-fit exercise routines to their users.
The machines, called Smartrainers, include components that work every muscle group in the body. Club members activate the Smartrainers using individual computerized keys, which store data and allow the users to get personalized workouts.
Each machine has a screen that displays the exercises and instructs the user on how many to do and how quickly. Exercises and workouts are also stored on personalized web pages for members to track their progress. The word "Koko" comes from a Japanese word meaning "individual."
"It sets the pace for you to follow and gives you feedback on every rep," said Koko Fit Club owner Steve Powell. "It really keeps you engaged, so that every time you come in you can get a different workout."
In addition to the Smartrainers, Koko also has several treadmills and elliptical machines, which also offer customized workouts. Koko Fit Club started in Boston and is now located in more than 26 states. The Darien location is in the Goodwives Shopping Center.
