New Darien Senior Facility Offers Care, Comfort

DARIEN, Conn. – Darien’s newest senior living community, Maplewood at Darien, is aiming to create the feel of a luxury hotel while featuring assisted living and memory care options and providing dining and entertainment venues.

“Our goal is to create a place of joy, where people can feel good about themselves and where they live,” Executive Director Jeanette Perlman said.

Maplewood is still under construction at Post Road and Brookside Road. Its first models will become available this summer. The 66-unit facility will have studio and one-bedroom apartments for single residents and couples and even room for pets.

The first floor will feature apartments as well as multi-purpose rooms, a wellness center with exercise equipment, a hair salon, a dining room featuring organic and locally grown foods, a garden and a small pub.

The second floor will have units for residents in different stages of memory care. It will have its own dining room and activity rooms as well as a small courtyard. The entire facility will be secure so residents who are prone to wandering will have space to walk without feeling restricted.

People are already calling to reserve spots. Many live in the area and want to remain or have family in the area, Perlman said.

“It’s interesting that more and more individuals are calling for themselves. It means that they’re looking at assisted living as a positive move in their lives, as a life that can be enriching for them.”

Many people choose assisted living for the social aspect of it, she said. Sometimes they may have lost their friends or a spouse and are looking to stay connected with others.

“Studies show that the more people engage with others, the better off they are and the longer they live,” Perlman said.

Seniors will be able to live as independently as they want in the facility, Perlman said. Each resident who needs medication will be able to access it in their room. Licensed nurses will also be on hand at all times to help anyone who needs assistance. Maplewood has partnered with New England Medical Associates to provide clinical services to residents.
