For Dimas Amaya, Ella’s father, the New Year’s birth was more than just an addition to his family, it was the reunion of one.

Amaya, who speaks mostly Spanish, told his story with the help of a nurse on Thursday afternoon.

A South American immigrant, Amaya left his home country for America in 2000, just 22 days before Ella’s mother, Nora Rodriguez, had the couple’s first daughter, Dawn Amaya-Rodriguez.

Rodriguez followed Amaya about 10 years later without her daughter, Dawn. But Amaya kept in touch with Dawn, who stayed in Honduras with family, through daily phone calls.

Seven months ago, Dawn followed her parents, and Amaya met his 14-year-old daughter for the first time.

On New Year’s Day, the family spent their first holiday together, in the maternity ward of Norwalk Hospital.
