DARIEN, Conn. About 10 years ago, Amanda Smith was in Central Park when she came up with the idea of selling pre-made picnics for the free concerts held in the park. Her business has expanded since then, and her catering company recently opened a new location in Darien.
"It was just at the beginning of the Internet age when I started doing the picnics. People could order it online and pick it up at the park," Smith said.
From there, she started catering small venues, building her way up. She established her catering company in New York in 2002, and last year she met Greenwich resident Madalene d'Etiveaud, who partnered with Smith to expand the business to Connecticut.
"We make everything by hand, using flavors from all over the world," Smith said. She spent 15 years traveling around Southeast Asia and other parts of the world, picking up flavors and recipes. She also honed her skills while living in Paris and her native Mexico.
"Our dishes are very, very genuine. If you order something French, you know it's going to be very French."
In addition to catering and event planning, Amanda Smith Catering has been approved to add a small café to its storefront on Tokeneke Road where customers will be able to order takeout meals and specialty coffees.
