“Darien and Norwalk are very fortunate to have a vibrant arts community which enriches our lives, strengthens our economy, and makes our area a better place to live. I believe that our continued support for these organizations is very important, and I congratulate all six of these groups on receiving these awards,” said Duff.

The organizations include the Darien Arts Council, Norwalk's Creative Connections, Norwalk's Cultural Alliance of Fairfield County, the Norwalk Symphony Society, Inc., the Norwalk Youth Symphony and Norwalk's Shakespeare on the Sound.

“Having a vibrant arts community not only increases our quality of life, it also spurs our economy and helps to create thriving centers of commerce,” said Malloy. “I’m proud that we could make investments in these different groups, so that they can continue to do the good and important work of enriching our communities.”

The grants will be awarded through the Connecticut Arts Endowment Fund, which is maintained by the state Department of Economic & Community Development and its Connecticut Office of the Arts.

“The arts are very important to our quality of life Norwalk, not just for the audiences that attend performances and view displays, but also for the children who gain an opportunity to grow and express themselves,” said state Rep. Bruce Morris (D-Norwalk).

The Connecticut Arts Endowment Fund was established by the State of Connecticut to stimulate the development of private sector funding for the arts and to help stabilize arts institutions, representatives said.

“Support for the arts does a number of things for our city, not the least of which is increasing our attractiveness as a cultural destination for tourists and other visitors. That means more customers for our local businesses,” said state Rep. Chris Perone (D-Norwalk).

The local grants are as follows:

  • Darien Arts Council - $1,615
  • Norwalk Creative Connections - $1,558
  • Norwalk Cultural Alliance of Fairfield County - $1,737
  • Norwalk Symphony Society Inc. - $1,149
