Sponsor a Butterfly to Fight Domestic Violence

DARIEN, Conn. – The Darien Domestic Abuse Partnership will inaugurate October's Domestic Violence Awareness Month on Oct. 2 with the release of 124 butterflies. The event, taking place at 1:30 p.m. at the Darien Nature Center, recognizes the 124 domestic violence calls made to Darien Police over the last year.

Susan Warren, co-chairman of the partnership, said "the incidence and severity of domestic abuse, both nationally and here in Darien, is increasing at an alarming rate."

The event, dubbed "Healing Wings of Hope," is open to the public and will feature members of Teen PeaceWorks from Darien High School, who raise awareness about dating violence and domestic violence. They will also bring PeaceWorks puppets Hip and Cool, who will sign autographs for children.

First Selectman Dave Campbell will attend, along with State Rep. Terri Wood. A proclamation from Gov. Dannel Malloy will be read.

Darien residents can sponsor a butterfly by buying a ticket before the event. Tickets are $20 and will be on sale throughout the week of Sept. 19-26 at Palmer's Market, the YWCA, the Darien Nature Center and the Darien Sport Shop.

Money raised at the event will benefit the Domestic Violence Crisis Center, which is the only domestic violence agency serving Darien, Stamford, Norwalk, Westport, New Canaan, Wilton and Weston.
