Snow was still on the ground, but the sun was shining bright Thursday afternoon when Annie Howard took her dog Charlotte to run around at Cherry Lawn Park ."She's been cooped up all this time," Howard said of the weeks of nonstop snow and ice . However, after so much dreary weather and cloudy skies, the past couple of days in Darien have been sunny and comparatively warm.
Charlotte was thrilled to get out of the house. From the second she hopped out of the car, she barely stopped running around the park, chasing her ball. Howard felt a similar joy. "I'm happy the sun's out again. Hopefully that means spring will be here soon."
Jennifer Sheehan was at the park at the same time with her dog Olie. She said that despite the harsh weather so far this year, she and her dog haven't stayed inside. "He needs to run around. I've had to come here every day," she said. "An hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon."
Sheehan said she enjoys taking Olie to Cherry Lawn to run around. "This is such a beautiful place. But it's been a long, cold winter."
According to the National Weather Service , no major storms are on the way to Darien for the next week. It will be mostly sunny Friday and partly sunny Saturday. There's a slight chance of snow showers Sunday, but Monday is expected to be mostly sunny again.
Sheehan doubts that the worst weather is completely behind us. "I think we'll have a couple more storms before spring get here," she said. "I'll be glad to see it finally get warmer."
For now, however, Darienites can look forward to a rest from the constant snowstorms. Enjoy it.
