Free medical information will be dispensed by four Darien doctors Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Darien Library . Dentist Maryann Lehmann, chiropractor Brian P. McKay, ob/gyn Brian S. Sheets and podiatrist Josephine Velasquez formed Doctors4Darien to make sure people without insurance can remain informed about their health. Tuesday's event will be their first.
"We feel like many people are staying away from doctors these days, whether it's because of anxiety or cost or lack of insurance," said Lehmann. "This is a forum where people can come in and ask questions."
The event -- "Ask the Doctors" -- is part of the library's Health and Wellness series of lectures, panel discussions, workshops and films to help spread knowledge and awareness of health issues. Lehmann said each doctor will give a short talk but that most of the night will be for fielding questions.
"We want to make this the beginning of a service, free of charge to the community," said Lehmann. "We're not there to advertise our practice, we want to answer questions and share information."
Lehmann said the doctors are also interested in starting an online service to answer questions by e-mail. She said it would let people get free healthcare information without having to share their identity.
Lehmann believes the forum is a helpful service and hopes people will come and ask a lot of questions. "If somebody's asking a question, chances are 20 more people in the audience have the same question," she said.
