The Season One winner of NBC's "The Voice," who has since gone on to a successful solo career, grew up in Stratford and now lives in West Hartford.

His new pop/rock/R&B CD, "Gravity" is out Friday, April 15. But first, he'll appear on "The Voice" on Wednesday, April 13. On Thursday, April 28, he'll perform at Ridgefield Playhouse in Ridgefield.

Daily Voice caught up with him between gigs.

Daily Voice: How is it coming "home" to play in Connecticut?

Javier Colon: "Shows at home are always amazing. There's an energy that is just different than everywhere else. I feel like I put more pressure on myself for home shows. I know that there are a lot of old friends, teachers, mentors, people who supported me as I was coming up and I just really want them to enjoy the show. It's always harder performing for people you know personally."

DV: How cool was it to play with The Derek Trucks Band?

JC: "It was phenomenal. It was my first gig out of college. When I first got the call about possibly singing with Derek, I didn't know his music. I started doing my homework and quickly realized how amazing he was. I learned so much from him and from the other guys in the band. They had been touring for years and it was my first touring experience ever."

DV: What may surprise people to know about your new album?

JC:  "Maybe that I produced or co-produced five songs on the record. I also recorded a lot of my guitar and vocals from here in Connecticut which was awesome. There's nothing like being able to record a song and walk downstairs and have dinner with your family."

DV: Anything else you want your Fairfield County fans to know?

JC: "I will always have a deep love for my fans here and for the area in general. My love for music started and was nurtured here. From doing talent shows in Stratford, performing in benefits in Trumbull for the Kennedy Center, to playing roles in Fairfield Teen Theater productions.

"I wouldn't be doing what I'm doing now had it not been for the many people in my life who encouraged me and helped me along the way. My cell is still 203 and I'll never change it."
