Town Feels No Fireworks Withdrawal

Once again, another Fourth of July will pass in Darien without a fireworks show in town. Since concerns about the turf on the football field shut the annual show at Darien High School, neighbors have had to travel to neighboring towns to get their fix. But the ever-resilient Darienites are still finding plenty of ways to have a great Independence Day this year.

Darien native Carol Felderman made the trip from Virginia to visit her parents for the holiday. Since they live close to DHS, she was awaiting the sound of the fireworks so that she could walk over and see the show. She was disappointed when she found out that the town no longer put on one. "It was something I looked forward to growing up," Felderman said. "I'm sad they're not still here."

Mark and Amy Raskopf were planning on taking their 5-year-old son, John, and their 18-month-old twins to Westport for the show at Compo Beach. But the boys didn't last long enough to make the trip. "It's kind of hard to see fireworks when everyone goes to bed by 7," Amy said. The Raskoffs were sad to see the fireworks go, but wouldn't mind a trip to Westport or New Canaan's Waveny Park for a show. "There's plenty of fireworks in the area," Amy said. "It's not that big a deal."

So what will the family do to celebrate the holiday? Amy didn't even hesitate after the question. "The Push-n-Pull Parade," she said. This will be the fifth time Jack marched in the parade, but it's a first for his younger brothers. "It's the best gig in town," Amy said.
