Cab Driver Stabbed by Passenger in Darien

DARIEN, Conn. – A New York cab driver was stabbed in the hand in Darien by a passenger who refused to pay his fare. The passenger ran off after the altercation and had not been located, police say.

The driver picked up his passenger in Manhattan at about 11 p.m. Dec. 21. The man was intoxicated and agreed to pay full fare to Darien, which would cost more than $100. The driver said the passenger fell asleep for a while on the ride.

When they arrived in Darien, the driver woke up the passenger, who did not give an address but directed him to a driveway on a road off Leroy Avenue.

When they stopped, the passenger refused to pay his fare, and began to argue with the driver. The driver threatened to call the cops, and took out his phone to call 911, causing the passenger to take out a pen knife and stab him several times in the right hand through the partition.

The driver left the area with the passenger still in the car. When he stopped at Squab Lane, the passenger took off on foot. The driver then called the police.

Paramedics arrived to clean and bandage the slice wound on the driver’s hand. He at first refused to be taken to a hospital but went to a hospital in New York later on his own. Police drove around looking for the driveway where the passenger had directed him, but the driver was unable to recognize the area.

The passenger was described as a white male in his 30s with a short, stocky build, black hair and wearing a button-down shirt and a dark overcoat. He also had a laptop bag with him.
