Plenty of Darien residents came out on a rainy night to support local charitable causes at the annual Chamber Wine Tasting and Auction, hosted by the Darien Chamber of Commerce . The event was held at Nielsen's Florist and Garden Shop , and proceeds went to such local groups as A Better Chance .
"The food is fabulous, it's a great venue. It's just spectacular," ABC Program Director Vyvyan Burns said. "ABC is very grateful to the Chamber of Commerce for selecting us this year."
Other charities supported by the event include YWCA Darien/Norwalk , the Darien Chamber Scholarship Fund and the Lions Freddie Fund. The food was supplied by Matsuri and Palmer's Fine Foods and Catering. The wine tasting was sponsored by WinePort of Darien.
The selections included wines from Spain and Argentina, and favorite brands included Elk Cove Pinot Noir and Atrea Old Soul Red. "I like the St. Hallet Faith Shiraz, but I'm still tasting," said Harry McLachlin, who is on the board of ABC.
Selectman Jerry Nielsen, who donated the venue for the event, was happy to play a part. "Our family philosophy is to support the community in every way we can," he said. "I'm happy so many people came out on such a rainy night. It's fantastic."
A silent auction and a live auction were both held. Items up for bid included vacations to Cancun and New York, Lady Gaga tickets, and gift certificates to local food and wine venues. Participants were allowed to bid on the silent auction items online before the event. "I thought the online auction was a very cool vehicle for doing the silent auction. It was a lot of fun," said Burns.
