"Click It or Ticket" When Driving Through Darien

DARIEN, Conn. – Make sure you’re buckled up when driving through Darien. The Darien Police Department will be taking part in the national “Click It or Ticket” enforcement campaign from May 21 to June 3 by intensifying efforts to enforce seatbelt laws.

All front-seat passengers are required to wear seatbelts while traveling. All passengers under 18 are required to wear seatbelts, regardless of whether they are sitting in the front seat or the back seat. Passengers over the age of 18 are not required to wear seatbelts if they are traveling in the back seat.

The current fine for adults who are not wearing seatbelts is $92. The fine for someone over 16 but under 18 is $120. A driver transporting passengers under 16 years old is responsible for making sure they are properly belted, and it is the driver who would receive the seatbelt violation.

Children under the age of one and weighing less than 20 lbs. must be secured in a rear-facing child safety seat. Children over one but less than seven, and weighing less than 60 lbs. are required to be in a safety seat or booster seat. The fine for not having a child in one of these seats is $92. A child over the age of seven and weighing more than 60 lbs. can sit in a regular passenger seat.
