Couple Loses $2,100 in Chimney Scam

A Darien couple reported being scammed out of $2,100 Oct. 13 by a company calling itself All-Purpose Chimney Care. The couple received a call from the company, saying they needed to have their chimney inspected. They agreed and ended up paying for the installation of chimney liner. The couple reported that the so-called inspectors arrived at their house in a white van with New York license plates and used an address that was a P.O. Box in Middle Island, N.Y. Darien police said they have seen this type of scam before and are investigating the quality of the work. They advise residents to be wary of calls from companies claiming to be chimney inspectors.

Also from the police blotter:

• Police arrested George Mercier, 18, last Monday for possession of marijuana, possession of alcohol by a minor and a defective turn signal. A police officer, who had stopped Mercier on Oct. 7 for a defective turn signal, saw Mercier on Edgewood Road and pulled him over again. When asked whether he had anything illegal in the car, Mercier replied that he had some marijuana in a pouch in the front seat. Police found a gram of marijuana, as well as four cans of beer in the back seat. Mercier was arrested and posted a $1,000 bond.

• Joseph Mangan, 49, was arrested Saturday on charges of driving while intoxicated and abating responsibility. Mangan was involved in an accident on Post Road near Nearwater Lane when he failed to grant the right of way to a 2001 Toyota Camry. His 2010 Lexus ES350 hit the other car, then left the scene. Mangan's front license plate was dislodged in the accident. Police responded to Mangan's residence, where they saw his car with damage consistent with that of the accident. When Mangan came to the door, the officers detected alcohol on his breath. Mangan admitted to being involved in the accident and failed a field sobriety test. He was arrested and posted a $250 bond.
