The Department of Transportation announced that maintenance crews are spending the day pre-treating roadways with salt brine, which helps melt snow once it begins to fall. The department has 634 plow trucks and 250 private contract plow operators on standby to be called if necessary, the DOT said.

Cars and trucks are strongly encouraged to stay off the roads Tuesday. If drivers do need to be out, they should operate with extreme caution around snow plows.
The Connecticut DOT is responsible for more than 10,000 lane miles of roads throughout the state. More than 35,000 lane miles of roads are maintained by Connecticut cities and towns.
Announcements will be made later in the day Monday regarding rail and bus service on Tuesday.
Travelers can also check individual service websites for updates on Metro-North, Amtrak, CTtransit, and Connecticut highways.
