Darien to Celebrate as Weed Beach Reopens Saturday

DARIEN, Conn. – Summer is almost upon us, and for many Darien residents that means relaxing and swimming at Weed Beach. After months of construction, the beach will be celebrating a grand reopening this Saturday.

The event marks the culmination of the long-delayed renovation project that started in August. Though the beach has technically been open since the work began, parking was greatly limited and visitors were greeted with the sights and sounds of construction.

The $2.7 million project involved the construction of a new bathhouse with changing rooms and concession stand, a new warming hut and paddle-tennis operations building, greener parking lot with less asphalt and more landscaping and sidewalks throughout the park.

The Darien YMCA also donated a collection of exercise equipment that was installed along the nature trail at the park, allowing beachgoers to work out.

The Weed Beach Opening Day is sponsored by First County Bank in Darien and begins at 10 a.m. The first 300 children who check into the event will receive a free goodie bag complete with a pail and shovel.

Organizations from all over Darien will be there to celebrate the beach’s new look. The YMCA will provide a demonstration of its new exercise equipment. Down Under Kayaking will give paddleboard demonstrations. Chris Bosak, a local bird expert and host of the Bird Calls Radio Show, will lead a bird walk. The Darien Nature Center will offer a presentation on sea life in Long Island Sound.

The Darien police will give a demonstration of its boat, with free ice pops supplied by Uncle’s By the Shore. The Darien Junior Sailing Team will also hold an open house.

A concert for kids begins at 1 p.m., provided by Dre Towey with Sugar on Top. At 5 p.m., the Darien High School Jazz Ensemble will play, along with BYOB cocktails.

Overflow parking will be available at Hindley Elementary School. The rain date for the opening event will be Sunday, June 3.
