Thanks to Darien Donuts, residents will have a chance to donate or purchase a wreath from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Oct. 31 at the store. Darien Donuts is holding the event for a second time because the first one was such a huge success.
Sponsored by volunteers from Monuments and Ceremonies, the VFW, the DAR, Boy Scouts, and the SOS club from Darien High School, this weekend's event will be the last chance residents have to take part in this annual ceremony. Members from each group will be on hand to explain the program, in addition to selling wreaths.
Wreath sponsorships are $15 each. For every two sold, the Worcester Wreath Co. will donate one. There are options to purchase a wreath for home use and corporate sponsorships as well.
Wreaths Across America performs the wreath-laying ceremonies in all 50 states on a specific Saturday each December. In addition to the wreath laying, the group also organize a week of events including international veteran’s tributes, ceremonies at State Houses and a week-long “Veteran’s Parade” between Maine and Virginia with stops along the way to spread the message about the importance of remembering our fallen heroes, honoring those who serve, and teaching our children about the sacrifices made by veterans and their families to preserve our freedoms.
If you can't make it to the Darien Donuts event, donations can be made by check, made out to Wreaths Across America and mailed to the Darien VFW Post 6933, PO Box 2172, Darien, CT 06820. Be sure to specify which location with the following information in the memo of the check: CTSGVD.
Donations may also be made online here. When you are ordering online you will need to enter CT0007 under Find a Fundraising Group. It is important that the sponsor CT0007 (Darien VFW Post 6933) and location CTSGVD (CT Veterans Cemetery at Spring Grove) be on the online form. For questions, email: philkraft@optonline.net.
