Darien Gets State Grant To Improve Gorham's Pond Habitat

DARIEN, Conn. – Darien will use a state grant to improve a wildlife habitat in the Goodwives River watershed, state officials said in a news release.

Darien's $400,000 STEAP grant will improve the environment for fish in Gorham's Pond and the overall health of Long Island Sound.

The project will build an aquatic habitat and remove sediment from the watershed from Upper Pond, which leads from the Goodwives River to Gorham’s Pond. The watershed from this pond eventually makes its way to Darien Harbor and Long Island Sound.

“This is a very important ecosystem in Darien and vital that we preserve the health and well-being of it,” State Rep. Terrie Wood (R-Darien/Norwalk) said in a news release.

Darien will add on to existing projects in the pond to improve the habitat for migratory fish that run from the river to the sound. Removing the sediment will also prevent possible contamination from flowing downstream into the Darien Harbor and the Long Island Sound.

“Long Island Sound and its many tributaries are the defining characteristics of our region, and protecting them is in everyone’s interest,” State Sen. Carlo Leone (D-Stamford/Darien) said.  “The Goodwives watershed is a local landmark and all of Darien will be appreciative of this wonderful investment.”

The state government awarded Darien a $400,000 grant to pay for the project through the Small Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP). The ongoing state program gives small towns funding for infrastructure projects and other improvements.

“STEAP grants give us the opportunity to invest in quality of life improvements in small towns across our state,” Gov. Dannel Malloy said in a news release. “These STEAP grants will assist small towns in completing important capital projects that otherwise may never get financed.”
