DARIEN, Conn. – The Darien-based youth group Global Girls and Global Guys Unite will host a walk-a-thon at Darien High School Sunday to raise money for livestock programs in Tanzania.
Global Girls and Global Guys Unite is the youth division of Unite the World With Africa, a social organization founded in 2010 by Darien resident Anne Wells. Unite the World With Africa works to provide connections, resources and expertise to advance women’s health, education and finance projects in Tanzania.
Its goal is to empower young men and women to become agents of change in the world through education, connections and fundraising. It helps kids learn about life in East Africa, create personal relationships with their peers in Tanzania and come up with unique ways to raise money.
“We are working to raise enough funds to build a piggery with the New Life Foundation in Moshi, which educates and cares for more than 500 orphans, as well as a chicken and goat program with the Matonyok orphanage outside of Arusha, which cares for 75 of the neediest orphan cases in the district,” said Wells, who has two children at Hindley Elementary School.
The walk will take place on the track from 1 to 3 p.m. The entire community is invited to attend. The cost of the walk is $15 per family or $5 for individuals, and children under 10 are invited to attend for free.
The group, and its director Simone Quinn, who has three children in the Darien schools, are organizing a large bake sale for the event. There also will be African gifts for sale, including Maasai-beaded ornaments and bracelets.
The group is hoping for a large turnout, and says even a little bit of money can go a long way. An egg-laying chicken costs about $20, a piglet is $50 and a dairy goat is $100. The group is hoping to be able to purchase a few cows, which cost between $500 and $750 each.
