DARIEN, Conn. - Darien will become a stop on a 2,900-mile trail from Maine to Florida as part of the East Coast Greenway .

The East Coast Greenway project was started in 1991 by a group of cyclists and long trail enthusiasts. Their goal is to link trails all along the East Coast that are used for non-motorized exercise and recreational activities such as biking and hiking.

The East Coast Greenway Alliance, a Rhode Island-based nonprofit that is spearheading the project, has been working with the Connecticut Department of Transportation to place signs on roadways from Hartford to Greenwich. They received permission this week from the Darien Police Department and the Board of Selectmen to make Darien part of the trail.

Signs will be placed in Darien designating the town as part of the Greenway. They will be placed on Post Road from the Stamford town line to Old Kings Highway South, and on Tokeneke Road from Locust Hill Road to the Norwalk town line.

First Selectman Jayme Stevenson said she favors the idea, as long as it does not create any expenditures for Darien now or in the future. The signs and their maintenance are supplied by the alliance.

Being part of the greenway will be a good thing for Darien, Selectman John Lundeen said. It will bring cyclists traveling the trail through Darien, rather than having to go around it, he said. He is also hopeful that it could be grounds for the government to provide sidewalks along the greenway.

The East Coast Greenway is about 26 percent completed, with more than 766 miles on 100 trails in 15 states. About 20 percent is completely off-road.
