DARIEN, Conn. Charles Kusche, 28, of 287 West Ave., was charged with drunken driving after crashing his car and fleeing the scene early Saturday. Residents of the area near Hollow Tree Ridge Road and Linden Avenue called police, saying that a man matching Kusche's description had failed to properly navigate a turn and crashed into a tree.
When police arrived, the car was abandoned and both airbags had deployed. Witnesses told police that Kusche had taken off on foot toward Noroton Heights. Police ran the plates and went to Kusche's house, where they found him trying to get into his house with great difficulty. He refused to answer their questions, but they noticed the odor of alcohol on him. He failed a field sobriety test and was arrested.
Kusche, who was not injured in the crash, was charged with driving under the influence, making an improper turn, evading responsibility, and driving an unregistered motor vehicle. He posted $500 bond and will go to court on Sept. 20.
