DARIEN, Conn. – Darien officials are considering hosting a gun buyback program in the wake of the Newtown shooting . Schools are also reviewing security measures and working with police to make sure the schools are as safe as possible.

First Selectman Jayme Stevenson spoke with Police Chief Duane Lovello, who said he would be willing to host a buyback program. Stevenson has asked the chief to come up with a plan for how and when the program would be held, adding that it would probably be better to host the buyback soon.

School facility officials did a walk-through of all school buildings, said Superintendent Stephen Falcone. They checked every lock on every door in every classroom to make sure that everything was working properly.

Darien schools put a big emphasis on security after the Columbine High School shooting in Colorado in 1999, Falcone said. Every school has keyless magnetic entries at its main doors, buzz-in systems, security cameras and walkie-talkies. The high school has security monitors and a student resource officer, and every school has volunteers at the front entrance to sign in visitors and look out for suspicious people.

Falcone said he would consider adding a police liaison to the other Darien schools, though he probably wouldn't recommend having armed security personnel at the schools.

Lovello has requested a copy of all lockdown procedures at the schools for police to monitor. He said the police will then visit the schools with administrators and further review security measures. Police also plan to visit schools and conducting drills with staff members to make sure they are prepared in the event of an emergency.
