Darien Photo Shop Closing After Six Decades

Fairbanks Photo in Darien will close its doors at the end of the month after 63 years in business. In an announcement made on its Facebook page Wednesday afternoon, owner George McKnight expressed what a difficult decision it was to make.

"Many of you have not only been the best customers any business could ask for but have become dear friends as well," he said.

McKnight said he is not bitter about closing. He cited economic factors and changes in technology. "In this uncertain economic climate and breakneck-paced technological time, one needs to assess if they can maintain the course or pursue the 'next chapter.' Unfortunately, this assessment has shown that it is time to say farewell to what is known and chart the next course."

He has been running the shop for the last 29 years. His wife's family has owned it since 1947, when Russell Fairbanks first opened the shop. A year later, he created the first yearbook for Darien High School that featured photos of the students. Over the years, it has offered many photography services such as restoration, correction, framing, enlargement, digital transfers and custom greeting cards.

Last year, the store moved from its original location on Post Road to a small space tucked next to Chunky Pam's Sweet Shoppe . The store will close for good June 30.

McKnight said, "I will continue to provide certain services if there is a need for them in your imaging projects." These services include scanning for archives, slideshow production of special events and composite production for collages.
