Darien Police Warn of 'Vegas' Phone Scam

DARIEN, Conn. — Be wary if you get a call from Las Vegas saying that you've won a sweepstakes. Darien Police say someone is calling residents and trying to scam them over the phone.

So far, two residents have received calls from someone claiming to be from Las Vegas, Police Lt. Ron Bussell said. They are told they have won $250,000 and a brand new Mercedes in a sweepstakes. All they have to do is send $250 to cover the taxes.

Bussell said the caller tries to play on the gullibility of the targets, asking them to send the money quickly so they can receive their prize as soon as possible. One target was an elderly woman, and the other was in his 50s. Neither sent money.

If you receive a similar call, you should contact the police at 203-662-5300.
