Darien School Board Race to Be Contested This Year

DARIEN, Conn. – There will be four candidates vying for three spots on the Darien Board of Education this election. Both the Republican and the Democratic parties nominated their candidates for the board Wednesday night.

The Democrats nominated Patty McCormick and Katie Stein. The Republicans nominated current chair Elizabeth Hagerty-Ross and Sara Schneider-Zuro.

This is the first board race in several years with more candidates than open spots. The open positions currently are filled by Hagerty-Ross, Republican Amy Bell and Democrat George Reilly. The Democrats chose to run two candidates to gain another seat on the board.

“We thought that these were both exceptional women and we’re very excited they chose to step forward. It’s all about giving people a choice,” said Democratic Town Committee Chair Randy Klein.

McCormick is the former board president of the Community Cooperative Nursery School in Rowayton, and has been active on the PTO of Ox Ridge Elementary and in the Council of Darien School Parents. Stein worked as a staff attorney for the Sanctuary for Families Legal Center, where she now serves on the board, and is the co-chair of the Tokeneke Elementary School PTA.

Hagerty-Ross has served on the board for six years, including as chair this past year. She has prior corporate experience in investment banking and financial control. Schneider-Zuro is a former teacher and school administrator in the Ossining, N.Y. school system and is a former CDSP budget representative for Holmes Elementary School.

The Republicans also nominated Keri Glick to succeed Donald Smith as the Republican Registrar of Voters. Glick has lived in Darien for 25 years, where she has been involved in many school and sports volunteer activities.

The Democrats chose Kathy Hammell to succeed Democratic Registrar of Voters Thomas Dunn. Hammell also has been involved in many town volunteer activities, including the Board of Finance and the Town Pension Board.
