DARIEN, Conn. Dariens Stop & Shop stores donated $5,000 to Person-to-Person through its Food for Friends campaign. The money will be used to fund food for Person-to-Persons Supplemental Summer Food Program, which provides groceries to Stamford families on the free lunch program.
Customers at the Stop & Shops in the Goodwives Shopping Center and Noroton Heights donated to Food for Friends by purchasing $1, $3 or $5 paper turkeys at the checkout counters. Food for Friends is the supermarket chain's program that helps out local hunger causes.
The Supplemental Summer Food Program was started in 2011 to help low-income families in Stamford Public Schools. The program provides a weeks worth of free groceries in July and August to students who would receive free lunch during the school year. Recently Person-to-Person has experienced a shortage of food in its pantry, and the donations from Stop & Shop are expected to help provide relief.
