Calling it their SOUPer Bowl 2016 event, volunteers with the organization are asking the public to donate cans of hearty soup to their effort now through Feb. 7. They are hoping each person will donate between five to 10 cans of soup. But even one can helps.

All of the food and soup donated will help stock the shelves of the P2P Food Pantries in Darien and Norwalk.

Giving is even easier this year by setting up an online shopping venue through Peapod, which allows residents to order the soup online and have it delivered directly to P2P. Residents can make an online donations and P2P volunteers will do the shopping for them.

Hearty soups are the best, including Beef Barley, Chicken Noodle, Corn Chowder, Lentil, Minestrone, and Vegetable. Donations can be dropped off at the P2P Food Pantry in Darien at 1864 Post Road or at 76 S. Main St. in Norwalk.

Person-2-Person was founded after the assassination of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968. It was founded by the Rev. Robert Back, rector of Saint Luke’s Parish in Darien, who had attended the seminary with King and wanted to do something in his honor.

From the outset, Person 2 Person began by helping and educating. The efforts to help began with food and clothing drives, and grew to include financial assistance for emergencies, camps so children would be safe during the summer while their parents worked, and college scholarship aid to help break the cycle of poverty. Person-2-Person offers services to people with limited resources to help them meet the challenges of daily life and give them a helping hand.
