Darien's Weed Beach Unveils New Exercise Equipment

DARIEN, Conn. – Visitors to Weed Beach in Darien can now get even more exercise than just running in the sand and swimming in Long Island Sound. The YMCA has donated a collection of exercise equipment along the nature trail that allows users to get a complete body workout.

“I couldn’t be more happy about this additional component,” said Parks and Recreation Director Sue Swiatek. “It makes it interesting and difficult, and I like that.”

The equipment is being added as part of the major renovation at the beach. Nine pieces of equipment have been placed along the half-mile trail in three separate stations, designed to keep the user moving from one station to the next to build their workout. The trail has also been widened and wet areas have been addressed to improve the experience. Each station has instructions on the proper way to use the equipment so you won’t get hurt.

The pieces allow you to work out your abs, chest, arms, back and legs and include squat press, ab crunches, cardio steppers, pull-up bars and push-up machines.

Eighteen months ago, the YMCA brought together community leaders, including state Rep. Terrie Wood and state Sen. Bob Duff, to create the Pioneering Healthy Communities committee. The goal was to find ways to increase a healthy active lifestyle in Darien. The committee received a $40,000 grant from the Robert Wood John Foundation, which they used to install the equipment.

“At the YMCA, we believe that the solution to solving the nation’s lifestyle health crisis begins with prevention on the local level,” said Pat Morrissey, executive director of the YMCA. “Having outdoor equipment stationed on this new trail will provide our community with a perfect opportunity to improve health and wellness while increasing the value of our town’s beautiful beach.”

The construction at the beach is set to be finished by Memorial Day weekend, with a grand opening ceremony June 2.
