Missing Easton Couple, Rower's Bronze Medal Top Week's News In Darien

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Here's a look at the top stories from around Fairfield County last week.

  • Jeanette and Jeffrey Navin, a couple from Easton, have not been seen since Aug. 4. The family of denies that the disappearance of the couple — she is a school aide in Weston and he owns a trash-hauling business in Westport — is due to financial troubles. Their vandalized pickup truck was found in a Westport commuter parking lot days after they were reported missing. 
  • Football legend Frank Gifford was remembered for his charitable work in Greenwich after his death at the age of 84. 
  • A Stamford father and his daughter, a Norwalk resident, were charged in a road rage incident in which they tried to drive the other car off the Merritt Parkway and the daughter then hit one of them in the head with a C-clamp, Stamford police said.
  • The Town of Fairfield temporarily shut the doors to its animal shelter over concerns about the spread of a canine parovirus. The move came just days after Bridgeport closed its shelter for the same reason.
  • The state Supreme Court's decision to overturn the death penalty means the 11 men on Connecticut's Death Row will now serve sentences of life without the possibility of release. Those spared the death penalty include the two killers in the Cheshire home invasion as well as Russell Peeler Jr., who ordered his brother to kill an 8-year-old boy and his mother in their Bridgeport home in 1999. 
  • British Army veteran Neil Davis marched through Danbury as part of his 3,178-mile coast-to-coast trek to call attention to the plight of military veterans who are suffering from combat-related stress and post-traumatic stress disorder. 

  • Burglars struck at two Wilton homes, including one on Drum Hill Road where they grabbed three watches, a gold ring and a pair of headphones worth an estimated $25,000, police said. 
  • Ridgefield’s Kaitlyn Kynast won a gold medal in the women's four for the United States and Darien’s Julia Cornacchia won a bronze as part of the women's 8 at the World Rowing Junior Championships in Brazil.

  • The co-owners of Olivette, a boutique olive oil purveyor with stores in Darien and Westport, share their specialty wares at the Farmers Market. 

  • Kids at the Easton Community Center's camp are soaking up the summer with special programs for kids ages 3 up to 14.
