"Despite a diligent effort to find a new location, the Postal Service has not yet found a suitable site to house the postal operation," the statement said. "We are committed to continue the search for a viable permanent location to provide Stamford customers with full postal services within the immediate area."

The historic building at 421 Atlantic St. has been sold. It was built in 1916, according to its Wikipedia entry. The building, with an Italianate architecture style, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

Until a new site is found, customers with post office boxes at the Atlantic Street building will be required to pick up their mail at 317 West Ave. in Stamford. Those customers should bring identification to pick up their Atlantic Avenue PO Box mail .

The hours at 317 West Ave. are 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.

"The Postal Service is working to build appropriate space at 317 West Avenue to provide current Atlantic Street PO Box customers with a new PO Box at that site by late fall or early winter," the statement said. "Those PO boxes will be made available at the West Avenue site until we find a new permanent location to replace the 421 Atlantic Avenue operation.  No change of address will be required by any current PO Box customers during this transition."
