Elderly Darien Man Loses $12,500 to Scammers

DARIEN, Conn. – An elderly Darien man was scammed out of $12,500 by a person claiming to be his grandson.

The 84-year-old Darien resident received a call on April 10 from someone claiming to be “Officer David Rogers” of the Buffalo, N.Y., police department. The caller told the man his grandson had been arrested and that money was needed to post bond. During one conversation, the victim spoke with someone claiming to be his grandson, and he told police that even though the caller did not sound like his relative, he did not question it and did as instructed. He wired the money through Western Union at Stop & Shop supermarkets in Darien and Norwalk.

When police checked the phone numbers used to call the Darien man, they could not find any information for one of them and believe another may have come from Montreal, Canada. The victim wired the money to a location in Lima, Peru.

This is similar to a case in late March where a Darien woman wired $2,400 to bail her grandson out of jail, only to find out later that she had been scammed. In that case, she also wired money to Lima, Peru.
