Employee Suspected in Darien Trader Joe's Robbery

DARIEN, Conn. – Darien police suspect an employee is responsible for stealing $2,700 from a safe in Trader Joe's. The manager of the store came in at 7:10 a.m. Wednesday and noticed the money was missing from the safe.

The money, a combination of $5, $10 and $20 bills, was last seen at 9:50 the previous night, when it had been counted and placed in the safe. The seal that had been placed over the door of the safe was found in a trashcan when the robbery was discovered.

A number of employees would have had access to the store during the time the robbery took place and several have the combination to the safe, police said. There was no sign of forced entry, and there were no security cameras in the area. Police say the matter was still under investigation.

Also from the police blotter:

• A group of young children allegedly threw a rock at a car on Hollow Tree Ridge Lane on the evening of Sept. 10. A driver was traveling north on the road at 6:26 p.m. when she heard the loud noise of the rock hitting the passenger-side cargo window of her car. The window was cracked and had several pieces dislodged. She saw a group of three or four children between the ages of 5 and 7 running from the scene.
