Fatal Stamford Crash, Big Snowstorm, Racist Fliers Top News In Darien

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — Two young Stamford men died in a fatal crash, the year's first major snowstorm dumped 14 inches on Fairfield County, and police investigated white supremacist fliers found in several towns — those are some of the week's top stories in Fairfield County.

Pain pierced Brian Murphy’s heart after two young men he worshiped as brothers died in a tragic Stamford automobile accident. The vision to extend their friendship into early adulthood was shattered on Hope Street when a pickup truck slammed into a tree, killing two people. Lucas Salem and Tommy Molgano died the crash.

Thursday's snowy blast was the worst storm to strike Fairfield County in two years and left most residents buried under a foot or more of snow. The snow began falling just before dawn Thursday, and it intensified throughout the morning. At times the snowfall rate reached 2 to 3 inches per hours. 

Some residents of Norwalk were disturbed to find white supremacist fliers on their driveways on Monday, police said. Similar fliers were found in Weston the same day, and police are seeking information on a suspicious vehicle that may be connected, police said. In all, 30 fliers were collected from the ends of driveways near Route 53. And Wilton Police reported that they found three of the same fliers, and they notified the FBI.

A Bridgeport man died Thursday morning in a tragic shoveling accident on Manhattan's Upper East Side. Miguel Gonzalez, 59, a longtime doorman at an apartment building on East 93rd Street, slipped and fell down a short flight of stairs while shoveling, police said. Gonzalez bled to death after falling into a glass entryway and suffered severe cuts on his neck, throat and face. 

Matthew Badger, whose three daughters died in a tragic Christmas Day house fire in 2011 in Stamford – has died at the age of 51. “We are deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of Matthew Badger, LSG co-founder,” the LilySarahGrace Fund – a charity founded by Badger – wrote in a statement posted on Twitter.

Gov. Dannel Malloy released his proposed state budget for the next two years on Wednesday, which dramatically reduces or outright eliminates Education Cost Sharing grants for some of the wealthiest towns in Fairfield County, while maintaining or increasing aid for some of the larger cities. In announcing his budget, Malloy said that the state would use a new formula in deciding how much money municipalities would receive in municipal aid, the majority of which goes toward schools in the form of ECS grants.

A 32-year-old man was hit in the groin and the leg in a wild shootout involving two other men who had just left a Super Bowl party on Towne Street at 11 p.m. Sunday, Stamford Police said. The shooting was captured on surveillance video at the upscale apartments. Lou Geneus, 34, was arrested at his Bridgeport residence Friday in connection with the shooting, and a second suspect was being sought.  

A 35-year-old Milford man suspected in several Fairfield County robberies was arrested in Shelton after an armed robbery at the Subway restaurant on River Road, police said.  

U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) told employees at a Shelton manufacturing company he hopes to meet with President Donald Trump soon to discuss closing loopholes in the Buy American law to protect jobs and national security.

A pedestrian who was hit and killed while crossing the street in Greenwich on Monday night was identified as a Port Chester man in his 80s, police said.
