Stratford resident Matthew Petrovich, 38, pleaded guilty in court this week to one count of possession of a firearm by a previously convicted felon dating back to an incident in September last year, John Durham, the United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced on Wednesday, May 9.
According to court documents and statements made in court, officers from the Stratford Police Department were dispatched to a local home on Sept. 26 last year, where there was a report from a woman who claimed that Petrovich had “physically assaulted her and threatened her with a firearm while she was holding a young child.”
Officials said that after he was taken into custody, investigators seized an AK-74 semiautomatic rifle, an illegal short-barreled shotgun and more than 350 rounds of ammunition.
Petrovich had previously been convicted of conspiracy to commit assault and robbery in March 2000. Durham noted that it is a violation of federal law for a person previously convicted of a felony offense to possess a firearm or ammunition that has moved in interstate or foreign commerce.
When he is sentenced later this year, Petrovich faces a maximum term of up to 10 years in state prison.
