FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- The Bridgeport community rallied to help pay the funeral expenses for a slain mother and a man died after his car plunged into the Saugatuck River in Westport. These are among the top Daily Voice stories this past week in Fairfield County:

Westport police were investigating whether rainy conditions may have caused an out-of-state couple to end up driving into the Saugatuck River, killing Richard Lamendola, 76, of Syosset, N.Y.  Foul play is not suspected in the Feb. 25 accident, police said. A woman survived after she was pulled from the cold water.

Jacqueline Villafane, 29, of Bridgeport, was charged with stealing $2,500 in sneakers and jewelry when she worked as a home care nurse for an elderly woman , Stamford Police said.

A Stratford man was killed on I-95 in Fairfield early Monday after his car went through a wire guard rail and slammed head-on into a tree, police said.

A runaway tractor-trailer rolled onto I-95 from the Darien rest area, causing a multi-vehicle crash and sending one person to the hospital, according to Connecticut State Police.
