Midday Voter Turnout For Primary Already Tops 2012 In Connecticut

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — Reports coming in from polling places across the state indicate strong voter interest in Tuesday's presidential primary in Connecticut, Secretary of the State Denise Merrill said in a statement.

As of midday Tuesday, the statewide average for turnout was 15.8 percent, already exceeding the end-of-day average for the 2012 presidential primary, in which there was no Democratic primary.

These numbers are very preliminary, Merrill said, and more than 50 towns, including some of Connecticut’s largest cities, have not reported turnout figures.

“It is too early to tell but we are hearing anecdotal reports of high activity. However, not in every part of the state. We should know more later in the day when we have more towns reporting,” Merrill said.

Only voters who are registered to a major political party may cast ballots, and the percentage of turnout reflects voter registration of those enrolled in political parties.

Here is a sample of voter turnout in Fairfield County towns that had reported numbers by 1:30 p.m., Merrill said:

Bethel: 404 total, or 6.3% turnout
Bridgeport: No live report
Brookfield: 1,101 total, 18.41% turnout
Danbury: 1,429 Republicans, and 7,256 Democrats, for a total turnout of 17.37%
Darien: No live report
Easton: No live report
Fairfield: No live report
Greenwich: 2,837 voters for 13.50% turnout
Monroe: 439 Republicans, 296 Democrats for a total turnout of 12.23%
Newtown: 2,032 voters for a 19.89% turnout
New Canaan: No live report
New Fairfield: No live report
Norwalk: No live report
Ridgefield: 1,487 voters for a 13.48% turnout
Redding: No live report
Shelton: No live report
Sherman: 324 voters for a 21.44% turnout
Stamford: No live report
Stratford: 1,834 voters for a 10.69% total turnout
Trumbull: 1,443 voters for an 11.01% total turnout
Weston: No live report
Westport: No live report
Wilton: 1,179 voters for a 15.69% total turnout

Registered Democrats and Republicans in Connecticut can cast their ballots anytime before 8 p.m.

Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders and Rocky de la Fuente face off for the Democratic nomination. Ted Cruz, John Kasich, Donald Trump and Ben Carson will vie for the Republican nomination.

Can't decide who to vote for? "Uncommitted" is also offered as a choice by both the Democratic Party and Republican Party.
