Occupy Darien To Go On Despite Arrest

DARIEN, Conn. – After the news broke Monday afternoon that Occupy Darien organizer Margaret Rague had been arrested over the weekend, opponents of the event took the opportunity to further criticize Rague and Occupy Darien . However, Rague confirmed to the Daily Darien on Monday night that, despite the arrest, she plans to go forward with the protest.

Darien police told the media Monday that Rague was arrested Saturday night and said she was walking intoxicated in the middle of the road. According to the police report, Rague was hostile toward the officers and refused to identify herself, submit to fingerprinting or allow her photo to be taken.

Rague wrote that the charges were “lie, lies and more damned lies. The last thing that was said to my fiancé by a certain officer as I left the station was: Tell Margaret that if she says anything negative about the Darien Police at Occupy Darien she will be subject to arrest. Fascism is alive and sick in Darien.”

Readers were quick to jump on the story, criticizing Rague for her actions and using the incident as further reason why the protests should not take place.

One reader, username Donkeybuster, wrote, “Please don’t try to obscure what your behavior reveals about the core of who you are by ranting about something you claim the police did. That all happened after you made a series of bad decisions to arrive in their care. You have laid bare the value of your judgment.”

Some have come to Rague’s aid. Reader Bogs101 wrote that after the arrest, Rague was an easy target. “Let’s lay off the personal attacks and hope the best for her. The rest will fall into place.”

Nondenominational Christian minister the Rev. Barbara Sexton wrote a blog post, asking people to have compassion for Rague. She said this is the time of year when people should pull together for others.

Rague said, “I organized this event to show the world what a caring place Darien is. If ever there was a moment to stand up and be counted and weigh in on the side of common decency, this is it.”
