Trains were temporarily suspended between New Haven and Bridgeport due to police activity, Metro-North said. But service had been restored, and was operating with delays, Metro-North said.
Metro-North spokesman Aaron Donovan said one person was struck and killed by an Amtrak train that left Washington, D.C., at 3:15 a.m. and was due in Boston at 11:05 a.m.
The accident happened at 8:27 a.m. Wednesday. Donovan said a pedestrian or trespasser was hit by the train on the Metro-North tracks. It happened at the train station in Stratford, he said.
Metro-North service was suspended from 8:59 to 9:20 a.m., and is now operating with delays of up to 30 minutes.
The Amtrak train was still at the scene as the investigation continued, he said. The passengers onboard may have to be moved to another train or bus.
On its website, Metro-North said service is suspended "as a result of a trespasser struck by a train."
Customers traveling west of Stamford should anticipate delays, Metro-North said.
This is the fourth pedestrian hit and killed by trains on the New Haven Line in Connecticut in recent weeks.
On Oct. 20, Jennifer Battista, 41, of Milford, was hit by an Amtrak train on the tracks near the Southport station in Fairfield. Her death ""did not appear to be criminal or accidental," officials said.
On Sept. 9, the Rev. Colin McKenna, a 50-year-old priest in the Diocese of Bridgeport, was killed when he was struck by a Metro-North train near the Westport station in what was called a possible suicide.
On Aug. 7, Tamar A. Louis, a 28-year-old Stamford resident, was killed when she was hit by a train at the Cos Cob station in Greenwich after lowering herself onto the tracks to retrieve a dropped item. The medical examiner's office ruled her death a suicide.
