DARIEN, Conn. -- Help stock the shelves of the local food pantry by donating non-perishable foods at the same time you are out voting on Tuesday, Nov. 3 .

Person-to-Person (P2P) will be collecting non-perishable foods to help stock the P2P Food Pantry in Darien from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. at each of the three polling locations in town including 35 Leroy Avenue, Norton Heights Fire Department and Town Hall.

In Fairfield County, nearly 12 percent of residents are struggling with food insecurity. For children, the number is even higher, with one in six not knowing where their next meal is coming from, according to P2P.

Last year, P2P Darien provided clients with groceries for more than 192,000 meals – including families right here in Darien, said Darien site manager Sophie Neumann. She expects this year’s demand to exceed that total.

“Fortunately, because of the generous donations from members of the community, we will be able to meet the need of people who come to us for food,” she added.

Neumann notes that the combination of individual donations and P2P partnerships with local retailers and food banks enables P2P to provide groceries for a full week of meals at an average cost of $35 per person.

“Any non-perishable food donation is most appreciated,” says Neumann, “but the items needed most right now include beans, canned fruit, hot and cold cereal, pasta, pasta sauce, canned vegetables and hearty soups.”

For more information about P2P, contact Sophie Neumann at 203 621-0685 or at sophieneumann@p2pHelps.org .

Person-to-Person was established in 1968 to provide low-income individuals and families living in lower Fairfield County with basic emergency services. A community-supported agency, P2P is committed to helping clients achieve self-sufficiency through practical help, advocacy, education and problem solving initiatives. With offices in Darien and Norwalk, the P2P service area includes Darien, New Canaan, Norwalk, Stamford, Weston, Westport and Wilton. More information may be found at www.p2pHelps.org.
