Power Restored Across Darien After Fire In Substation On West Avenue

Updated: DARIEN, Conn. -- It took more than three hours to restore power to all the customers in Darien who lost electricity after a fire at a substation Tuesday evening, according to Connecticut Light & Power.

The fire was reported at about 6 p.m. Tuesday, according to a report in the Darien Times. Initially, more than 4,300 customers in town lost power, or about half the town, CL&P told the Darien Times.

By about 7:10 p.m., the outages were reduced to 1,355 customers, or 17 percent of the town, CL&P said. By 8:20 p.m., the number had been reduced to 951 customers without power, or about 12 percent of the town, CL&P said.

Darien First Selectman Jayme Stevenson ‏confirmed that the outages were due to a fire.

"1355 Darien CL&P customers without power. Fire in West Ave substation. No estimated time of recovery yet.#darien," Stevenson ‏said via Twitter @JaymeStevenson.

Later, she Tweeted that CL&P estimated a restoration time of 8 p.m. for Darien customers without power.

Power was fully restored to all Darien customers after 9 p.m., CL&P confirmed.

The Darien Library remained open despite the power outages.

"Yes, we are open until 9 and operating at full-force under generator power," Darien Library ‏said via Twitter @darienlibrary.
