Romney Tops Darien Campaign Contributions

DARIEN, Conn. – Darien residents have contributed a lot more money to Mitt Romney than any other candidate in the 2012 presidential race, according to information from the Center for Responsive Politics. The Republican presidential hopeful has received more than three-quarters of all contributions from the town.

The Center for Responsive Politics is a research group that tracks money in U.S. politics. All political candidates must report the names of donors who contribute more than $200. Individuals are allowed to give up to $2,500 to a political candidate for the primary season and another $2,500 for the general election.

Darien residents have made 225 contributions to political candidates as of Feb. 22, totaling $312,449. The 150 donations made to Romney’s campaign, for a total of $246,075, represent 78 percent of all the money Darien has given.

President Barack Obama has received the second highest number of contributions, though he is far behind Romney. Forty-two Darien residents have given money to Obama’s campaign for a total of $31,574. This is 10 percent of all Darien contributions to the 2012 race.

Republican Ron Paul has received four contributions totaling $3,900. Seven Darien residents have given a total of $1,300 to Newt Gingrich. Rick Santorum has only received two donations, totaling $500.

The Republican Club of Darien conducted a survey of Republicans in town in October, which revealed that Romney was the favorite among the candidates vying for the Republican nomination. Out of 12 candidates, he received 37 percent of the votes.

Darien First Selectman Jayme Stevenson and State Rep. Terrie Wood, both Republicans, have each donated $500 to Romney’s campaign.

Romney received 92 contributions in the 2008 race, totaling $127,450. Obama received $298,302 in contributions, while his opponent John McCain received $288,524.
