Both roads are part of Route 136. There is currently a stop sign on McKinley Street at the intersection, but the new stop sign will create a three-way stop, said state Sen. Bob Duff (D-Norwalk, Darien).

“This new stop sign will reduce the number of speeding cars in the neighborhood, improve the quality of life in the area and increase our students’ safety near Rowayton Elementary School,” Duff said.

“This is a highly traveled section of state road this in its current state presents difficulties for both motorists and pedestrians attempting to navigate the area,” said Mayor Harry Rilling. “A three-way stop sign is definitely needed and will significantly enhance safety in the neighborhood. Sen. Duff recognizes this and has helped to make it a reality.”

Duff thanked the neighborhood residents for their advocacy in pursuit of safer streets, and the state Department of Transportation for responding to their requests.

“This is a huge victory for child safety,” said Jody Sattler, who lives in the area near the intersection. “The corner’s proximity to the school, baseball and softball fields and the library means children of all ages, including mine, cross this intersection every day. I want to thank Sen. Duff for helping to keep our children and families safe.”

Duff has supported traffic-calming measures in the area. In 2007 he petitioned the DOT to ban commercial trucks from using Route 136 as a thruway.
