Thieves Strike Irene-Damaged Darien Home

DARIEN, Conn. – Thieves took advantage of a house left partially exposed by damage from Hurricane Irene and stole items from the garage and patio while the owners were away.

The owners of the Christie Hill Road home were unable to secure their garage because of extensive damage caused by two fallen trees. Between 2 and 6 p.m. last Thursday, someone went into the garage and stole a number of items, including two leaf blowers, a stepladder, an electric hedge trimmer and an antique steamer trunk.

A generator and three cans of gasoline were taken from the back patio.

• A New Canaan woman reported that her wallet containing $3,000 in cash went missing while she was at the Stop & Shop on Heights Road in Darien on Monday, Sept. 5. She noticed it was missing the next day. She thought she had misplaced it until she received an email Sept. 7 from American Express saying someone had tried to use her credit card at a gas station. She told police her wallet must have been taken while she was at the store or that she left it behind and somebody took it.

The woman said the cash was for an upcoming trip. She said the wallet also contained about $1,000 in gift cards. Police said whoever took the wallet also tried to use the credit card in East Hartford.
